The Rajasthan Royals have had a strong showing in the 2022 Indian Premier League, thanks in large part to leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The right-arm spinner is presently the edition’s leading wicket-taker (with 21 dismissals), and he maintained his stellar season on Saturday, with statistics of 3/28 in four overs against the Punjab Kings. Chahal became just the second bowler in Indian Premier League history to record 20 or more wickets in four seasons when he picked up his second wicket of the innings, dismissing Mayank Agarwal on 15.

Prior to Chahal, only Lasith Malinga, who is also the fast bowling coach for Rajasthan Royals this season, has done so in the competition. In 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015, the Sri Lankan pacester, who spent his whole IPL career with the Mumbai Indians, got 20 or more wickets. Chahal, who started his IPL career with RCB and played for them till the end of the season, has previously collected 20 or more wickets in 2015, 2016, and 2020.

The leg-spinner had a great start to the 2022 season, including his first-ever hat-trick in the IPL against Kolkata Knight Riders, but he only got two wickets in the following four games. With his superb performance against RR, Chahal began to appear scary again, halting their momentum in the middle overs.

For the sixth time in ten innings, the leg-spinner had captain Mayank Agarwal and then dismissed Punjab top-scorer Bairstow in three deliveries. Despite Chahal’s heroics, Punjab Kings scored 189 for 5 against the Royals, owing to Bairstow’s half-century (56) and Jitesh Sharma’s blazing unbeaten 38.
