For many years, Yuvraj Singh shared the Indian team’s dressing room with players like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman. Three of them had Yuvraj as their captain, and he recently said that the atmosphere around these guys made him hesitant to even sit next to them in the locker room.

I still have to watch what I say in front of him after 20 years” (Kumble). To be honest, I believe it came as something of a shock. There are players like Ganguly (in the locker room), Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Tendulkar, and others, Yuvraj said at a Viacom18 Sports event in Mumbai for the debut of South Africa’s new franchise league SA20.

Yuvraj was discussing how the Indian Premier League (IPL) has helped rookie athletes feel more at ease than established athletes. He said that in their early international matches, junior players used to be far more terrified of the big stars in the locker room.

“When you were a child, you used to watch these men on television and instantly imagined yourself with them in the dressing room. To avoid sitting next to them, you had to request the coach’s seat. They are your teammates, therefore you have to sit close to them, the coach used to say. So, starting a conversation with them took some time. But thanks to the IPL, the young people feel more at ease near the players “said he.

Yuvraj played with the senior players for a while before surpassing players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in seniority. He played a key role in India’s victories at the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. Thanks to his all-around efforts, Yuvraj was named player of the tournament for the latter.
