Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have qualified for the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs for the second consecutive season, finishing seventh overall. However, in the 2022 season, a new RCB team emerged, one that was more dominating and had players with more defined roles. Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag credited RCB’s progress in IPL 2022 to new captain Faf du Plessis and coach Sanjay Bangar, and detailed how the squad has evolved since Virat Kohli’s leadership.

With eight victories in 14 games, RCB finished fourth in the league stage. They were the last team to qualify for the next round of the IPL 2022 when Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals in the season’s penultimate league game. On Wednesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, RCB will face the Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator.

While Kohli used to chop and alter his side a lot after a few of bad games, Sehwag revealed to Cricbuzz before of the team’s second playoff game this season that Faf and Bangar have given a lot of stability to the side, which has benefited the squad overall.

“With the addition of Sanjay Bangar as head coach and a new captain, RCB’s philosophy has shifted. We saw how Virat Kohli thought when he dropped a guy after no performance in two or three games. Bangar and Du Plessis, on the other hand, have maintained the squad fairly constant throughout. I don’t believe they made any changes owing to bad performance, with the exception of Patidar for Anuj Rawat “he stated.

The former India captain understands why RCB has benefited from having a foreign player as captain.

“If an Indian player had been captain and Virat Kohli had offered him advice, he could have felt compelled to take it under duress. So, with du Plessis as captain, things have changed. Sanjay Bangar has also worked with Kohli and may talk to him about how, despite his recommendations, the squad wants to do something else “He elaborated.
