‘There’s opportunity for Rishabh’s journey to be similar to Rohit’: Ponting opens up on Pant becoming future IND captain
Rishabh Pant, who is still young in his profession, has gone a long way. Pant’s career has been marked by ups and downs, as well as comparisons, despite the fact that he is only 24 years old. His flashy and left-handed batting reminded many of Australia’s great Adam Gilchrist during his first year in the Indian Premier League and subsequent selection for India. Ricky Ponting, the former captain of Australia and current head coach of the Delhi Capitals, has drawn a parallel between Pant and India skipper Rohit Sharma.
When Rohit Sharma was named captain of the Mumbai Indians in 2013, Ponting was a member of the team. Ponting, in reality, had stood down as captain and favoured the then youngster to succeed him. With five titles under their belt, Mumbai has become the most. successful IPL franchise in history.
Ponting drew a parallel between Rohit and Pant while speaking to the media before the start of the IPL 2022 season, in which Delhi will face Mumbai on Sunday.
“I haven’t given it much thought. However, I believe they are fairly comparable. Rohit was a young guy when he took over in Mumbai, and he was just getting started in his international career. He’d be around 23-24 years old, roughly the same age as Rishabh over here. To be quite honest, they’re very similar individuals. I know they’re excellent friends, and I’m sure they talk about leadership and captaincy every now and again, “he stated.
