Shane Watson, a former Australia all-rounder, has named Virat Kohli as the best batsman among the ‘big five’ in Test cricket, despite the Indian maestro’s failure to score a century since November 2019. Watson has beaten out the likes of Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, and Babar Azam, according to Watson’s list.

“When it comes to Test cricket, I’m always going to answer Virat Kohli,” he says in his latest episode of the ICC Review, Watson was asked who he thought was the best Test batter in the world by Isa Guha. “What he can do is almost superhuman because he plays with such vigour every time he goes out to play,” says one observer “Watson continued.

While Kohli has slid to 10th place in the ICC rankings, he still has a fantastic Test batting record. He has 27 Test hundreds and 28 half-centuries to his credit, and his Test batting average is at just around 50.

The ICC noted in a post on its official website that the world’s current No. 1 Test hitter Marnus Labuschagne, who has played 26 Test matches and averages 54.31, would have boosted the ‘big ‘five’ to a ‘big six,’ but was left out of the debate for this topic due to a 40-Test minimum threshold.
