According to sources, Shubman Gill, India’s Test opener, has been ruled out of forthcoming England series owing to injury. Recently, it was also claimed that Prithvi Shaw has been asked to fill in for Gill, who is now in Sri Lanka with the Indian team.

Even after a disastrous 2019-20 Ranji season, Bengal opener Abhimanyu Eswaran is now with the Indian squad (as a stand-by player) in England. He even had a bad A tour in New Zealand, and he wasn’t even considered to replace Gill. His pick over two in-form players like Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal has already sparked some debate.

“The BCCI president hasn’t yet received any formal request about sending Shaw and Padikkal to the United Kingdom. They are in Sri Lanka for the white ball series but obviously after it ends on July 26, both can be flown in. But I think, team management wants them to join before entering the bio-bubble in Durham,”

Chetan Sharma, the chairman of selectors, does not appear to be on the same page with the team management, as no formal request to the BCCI for Shaw or Padikkal to replace Gill has been made. Their tour in Sri Lanka will expire on July 26th, and they will be able to fly to the United Kingdom after that, but quarantine regulations will prevent them from doing so.

The India tour of Sri Lanka begins on July 8, while the India-England Test series begins on August 4.
