The first Test between India and England is less than five weeks away, but Shubman Gill’s availability is already in doubt. The young Indian opener is out for the first several Tests, if not the entire five-match series, due to injury.

According to reports from England, the 21-year-old rising sensation is suffering from a leg ailment that will keep him out of action. The nature of his injury is unknown, but it is apparent that it is of the type that would require him to be sidelined for some time.

Gill, on the other hand, is expected to stay with the travelling group in the hopes of being well enough to play at some point during the Test series, which concludes in just two and a half months.

Although Gill’s injury is a setback for the team, given that he showed good touch in the WTC final, the team’s management is not that concerned because there are numerous options available.

Initially, Mayank Agarwal or KL Rahul will be considered for the job of second opener, alongside Rohit Sharma.

In a few weeks, the team will fly to Durham for a pre-series camp and a handful of intra-squad games; the players, who took a rest following the WTC final, will return on July 14.
