On the day of India’s first ODI match against Sri Lanka, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced that star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will not be making his return from injury during the series. Bumrah “will need some more time to develop bowling resilience,” according to the BCCI, although India’s skipper Rohit Sharma subsequently admitted that the bowler had some stiffness when bowling at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy.

“With him, there was a pretty tragic situation. He’s been toiling away at the NCA for years, poor man. It occurred during the last two days, just as he was regaining his previous level of fitness. He had even resumed bowling. His back was a little stiff, he noticed. We must be really careful when Bumrah says anything since it is just a little stiffness. We took that action. In a news conference held before the first ODI in Guwahati, Rohit said, “I believed we needed to choose then to simply take him out.

“When we gave him his name, he was increasing his duties. In the netting, he was bowling. We took him out after noticing a little tightness in his back. We have to handle him with extreme caution. We only need to be cautious since he had a serious injury before the World Cup.

The selectors have not picked a stand-in for Bumrah, according to the BCCI’s statement. Due to a back issue, the 29-year-old has been out since September of last year. As a result, he was unable to participate in the 2022 T20 World Cup, when England defeated India by a margin of 10 wickets to get to the semi-finals.

That was also Rohit’s last Twenty20 international game. Hardik Pandya led the squad in place of the 35-year-old during India’s last T20I series against Sri Lanka. The senior pair’s absence from the shortest format of international cricket has sparked rumors that they may retire, but the Indian skipper indicated on Monday that he has no such intentions.

“First of all, playing back-to-back games is not permitted. You must allow them (all format players) sufficient downtime. I also fit that description. Three T20Is are scheduled against New Zealand. After the IPL, we’ll see what happens. I haven’t decided to abandon the format, Rohit remarked.

On Thursday at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, the second one-day international of the series will pit India against Sri Lanka. The final ODI, which will be played in Thiruvananthapuram, will conclude the series and Sri Lanka’s visit to India on Sunday.
