Rishi Dhawan: A second chance for the unassuming all-rounder
Rishi Dhawan told Cricbuzz ahead of the 2022 IPL Auction: “I’ve been seeking for a team for the past four or five years but have yet to find one. This time, I’m more sure in my choice; I’ve done all I can with what I have, and I’m hoping for the best at the auction.” He was properly rewarded for his solid efforts on the local circuit when Punjab Kings selected him in the auction for INR 55 lakhs. Dhawan, who had a tumultuous IPL career and last appeared in the competition in 2016, was given a second shot to fulfil his dreams.
An opportunity to redeem himself on the big stage was presented to him in his comeback IPL game against Chennai Super Kings. He was tasked with bowling the final over, and he went up against MS Dhoni, a seasoned finisher. And he ended up dismissing the Indian legend to put the final touches on PBKS’ victory. With the ball slipping down the leg-side, it wasn’t the finest of Dhawan’s career deliveries. Future generations may remember the all-rounder for the accoutrement – headgear – he ended up wearing in the game to shield himself from being struck while bowling. If the surface was scraped, though, the greater image that emerged from the night was one of a hard-working cricketer coming closer to his goal.
