Shreyas Iyer will quit the Delhi Capitals before the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). Iyer has been an important component of the Delhi-based franchise since his IPL debut in 2015. Aside from scoring a lot of runs, the right-handed batter also showed his leadership abilities.

Iyer took over as captain of Delhi from Gautam Gambhir midway through the IPL 2018, and led the team to the playoffs twice, including a first-ever appearance in the finals in 2020. Iyer was also expected to lead the Capitals in 2021. The 26-year-old, however, was forced to withdraw from the first leg due to a shoulder issue. Rishabh Pant was later named captain of the Capitals. While Iyer returned to the lineup for the second leg in the UAE, Pant continued to lead the team after a strong performance in the first.

The team is unlikely to rehire Iyer after the southpaw led DC to the IPL playoffs in 2021. Iyer’s time with the Capitals may come to an end as a result of this. According to a story in The Times of India, the right-handed batsman is eager to take over as captain. As a result, he’d end up in the auction pool, where he may work for another team.

It should be mentioned that the IPL will expand to ten teams next season with the addition of two additional teams. Many existing franchises, such as Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, BHwill be on the lookout for a new captain. Multiple franchises are interested in hiring Iyer since he is a successful skipper in his own right. As a result, the batter for DC may go big beneath the hammer. In the meantime, Iyer has stated that he supports the franchise’s choice to keep Pant as captain.

“This is part of the franchise’s decision-making or whatever decision they took, I respect the fact,” Iyer said at the time. “Rishabh has been leading the side well from the start of the season and they thought he should be continued until the season end, and I completely respect the decision.”

Iyer is currently playing as a reserve for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021. Following the completion of the tournament, India will play a white-ball series against New Zealand. Iyer would be adamant about shining in national colours in order to make a fortune at the auction.
