KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal of India were only the third opening combo from India to score a century in a Test match against South Africa in South Africa. The achievement was accomplished during the ongoing first Test against the hosts at Centurion’s SuperSport Park. Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik scored 153 in Cape Town in 2006-07, and Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag scored 137 in Centurion in 2010-11, respectively.

In the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 cycle, Mayank and Rahul are India’s third different pair in three series. In August, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul faced England, in November-December, Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill faced New Zealand, and now Rahul and Mayank face South Africa.

After winning the toss, Virat Kohli’s choice to bat first was predicted to backfire. The openers, on the other hand, backed up Kohli’s choice by surviving a tense first session before racking up the runs. They were 83/0 at the end of the first session, with Mayank on 46 and Rahul on 29.

Apart from Mayank’s lost catch, the Karnataka tandem offered no chances in the first Test as they dominated. After the lunch break, the clouds are forecast to lift, making batting easier, and the Indian squad will aim for a huge first innings total.
