The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league played between six teams representing six cities in Pakistan. Pakistan kick-started their own domestic T20 league following the footsteps of IPL after it became a global spectacle.

The Pakistan Cricket Board established the league on September 9, 2015, with five teams. Instead of being a collection of separately owned clubs, the league is a one single organisation with investors owning and controlling each franchise. The league debuted on February 4, 2016, in the United Arab Emirates, after several years of planning and two prior failed attempts. The goal of the PSL was to promote the country’s soft image in order to welcome cricket back home, and franchisees devoted themselves fully to the cause.

Five teams representing Pakistan’s provincial capitals and the federal capital competed in the first two seasons. The PSL had a higher percentage of international players in its debut season. In contrast to the auction approach utilised in some other T20 leagues, the league uses a draught system for player recruiting, similar to what employed in several North American professional sports leagues. The PSL’s official logo was unveiled on September 20, 2015, at a ceremony in Lahore. Today there are 6 teams that play in PSL. They are:

  • Karachi Kings
  • Islamabad United
  • Quetta Gladiators
  • Peshawar Zalmi
  • Lahore Qalandars
  • Multan Sultans

T20 cricket has been seen as a format in which batters dominated the game since its debut. In this style, when there is a lot of aggressive batting and big-hitting, the bowlers are decimated. This tendency can be seen in both international cricket and domestic T20 competitions around the world, where batsmen clearly outnumber bowlers but it’s hardly a typical occurrence in the PSL, where the bowlers and batsman are evenly matched. Even statistics back up this claim.

Instead of a player auction, the Pakistan Super League implemented a new form of player purchase; each team has a salary spending cap of $1.2 million, which includes salaries for players, coaches, and support personnel. In a 20-man squad, each side was allowed to select one icon and six foreigners. (16 active and 4 more). The PSL Auction process is a systematic method in which one club has a chance to win first bid for them, and another team has a chance to win second bid for them. Others would soon follow suit. The management of the company will have a time of 90 seconds every round after 20 rounds of auctioning. From a pool of 300 players, franchisees must choose their favourite player.
