After completing their quarantine period, batsmen Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav were called up to the India Test squad for the ongoing tour of England. They were called up at the end of July, while playing a white-ball series in Sri Lanka, as the Indian team management sought replacements for the injured trio of Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, and Washington S.

Suryakumar’s inclusion may have been spurred by team management’s concerns about the fitness of veteran batsman Ajinkya Rahane, who had not played in the warm-up match prior to the first Test due to a sore left hamstring. Then, in Sri Lanka, they were both among eight players identified as close associates of Krunal Pandya, who had tested positive for Covid-19. This put their journey to England in jeopardy for a while, but they eventually travelled over and went through quarantine as per travel policy.

Shaw is back in the Test squad after missing the home series against England earlier this year. Last December, he played in a pink-ball match in Adelaide, where he scored 0 and 4 in India’s heavy defeat. Suryakumar made his T20I debut in the home series against England and his ODI debut in Sri Lanka this month, after his international career took off during the 2020 IPL. He was recently selected Player of the Series for his 124 runs in three innings in India’s 2-1 win over Sri Lanka in one-day internationals. He has 867 runs in 32 T20s at a strike rate of 148.7 since IPL 2020.

Shaw resurrected his career with an outstanding performance in the domestic one-day Vijay Hazare Trophy, when he scored 827 runs in eight innings to lead Mumbai to victory. He kept his form going in the first half of the 2021 IPL, as he helped the Delhi Capitals get off to a fast start. Yet it remains to be seen how the duo performs against England in the Test series.
