Pietersen on ‘KKR’s dismal show’: ‘Players think they have to perform or be out’

Kevin Pietersen, a former England captain, has dubbed the Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2022 campaign, believing that too much chopping and changing has severely harmed the squad in the current season of the Indian Premier League. This season, KKR has been in the limelight for making several squad changes, sometimes as many as three, and the former swashbuckling batter believes this has created a feeling of uncertainty among players, causing the team to struggle to come together.

“Too much cutting and changing has been a factor in KKR’s poor performance, as the players believe this is their last game and they must produce or they will be cut. I don’t believe this is the best strategy in this game’s format “On Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Pietersen said.

“This format is all about boosting the players’ confidence and making them feel that the team they’re on, the brand they’re linked with, and the band they’re playing for are all in it for the long haul. The players want to feel that they have the commitment, that they can offer it, and I don’t believe you can give that commitment if there is too much chopping and changing.”

KKR are presently in sixth position in the points standings, and are nearly certain to miss out on a playoff spot if they lose against the Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday. LSG, on the other hand, has had a remarkable IPL start and is now in third place in the points standings. With a victory today, they will clinch a playoff berth and send KKR packing.

“It’s time to get serious. You might feel great for the first four or five weeks of the tournament, but if you play badly now, you’ll be down in the dumps. So the teams at the top of the standings, such as Lucknow, are hoping to earn two critical points against Kolkata Knight Riders in order to qualify for the playoffs “Pietersen remarked.
