Anil Kumble, the head coach of the Punjab Kings, revealed that the team had planned to keep KL Rahul ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, but that he respected his decision to choose a new team. It was widely assumed that Rahul did not want the Punjab-based team to keep him, and this was verified when the retentions were announced on November 30. After departing from Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rahul joined PBKS in 2018. Rahul was selected as their skipper in 2020, replacing Ravi Ashwin, who transferred to the Delhi Capitals after two successful seasons with the bat.

However, he was unable to improve his team’s fortunes, and PBKS failed to make the playoffs in both seasons. Kumble stated that PBKS has high hopes for Rahul and hence chose him as the franchise’s captain.

“Of course, Rahul posed the biggest obstacle for us. We obviously wanted to keep him. One of the reasons we chose him as captain two years ago was so that he could be the team’s core. However, he chose to participate in the auction, and we accept his decision. Kumble was cited in India Today as saying, “It’s the players’ prerogative.”

Mayank Agarwal, who was retained for INR 14 crores on Tuesday, was also praised by Kumble. Kumble, often known as Jumbo, believes Agarwal has the ability to lead the team in the future.

“I believe that in the last 3 to 4 years that Mayank has been with us, he has done incredibly well for us. He has been extremely successful in the two years that I have been working with the franchise. He’s a potential leader once more. He has a lot of experience in the IPL and international cricket,” he said.

Arshdeep Singh, a young fast bowler, was also retained by PBKS for INR 4 crores. Kumble has praised the youngster’s efforts over the last two seasons.

“In terms of Arshdeep Singh, he is someone who has emerged in the last two years in Punjab, where I have been involved. We wanted to make sure he stays with the team since he is only 21, and he has shown maturity and temperament,” Kumble continued.
