‘Don’t think anyone should take that for granted’: Kohli explains how Patidar’s knock is the best ‘impact innings’ ever

Rajat Patidar was the hero of the match at Eden Gardens on Wednesday evening, smashing an unbeaten 112 off 54 balls to assist Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) go closer to the IPL 2022 finals. Patidar and Virat Kohli helped RCB recover from a rocky start, and his finish with Dinesh Karthik helped his side set a massive target for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who lost the Eliminator by 14 runs.

After RCB captain Faf du Plessis was packing on 0, Patidar entered in the middle in the first over. After being selected to bat first, he went on to score 66 runs for the second wicket with Kohli, and then 92 runs off only 41 balls with Karthik to help RCB put 207/4 on the board.

Former RCB captain and India’s top batter Kohli praised Patidar’s match-winning performance, calling it “really very exceptional. I’ve seen a lot of impact innings and a lot of pressure innings over the years, but I haven’t seen anything better than how Rajat performed today,” Kohli said in a post-game interview with Patidar, who was chosen man-of-the-match.

“The enormity of the game was so great that I could sense the anxiety in the air,” Kohli said. “I’ve been in circumstances when you have to cross the line as a team. So what he accomplished was very unique, and I don’t believe anybody should take it for granted. You should recognise the quality of his innings and enjoy what it’s like to watch one as a cricketer.”

Bangalore will now face Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier 2 on Friday evening in Ahmedabad, thanks to their victory.
