To pursue “new chances in the realm of cricket and the business side of it,” veteran India opener Murali Vijay announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on Monday. In the Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia in December 2018, he made his last appearance for India.

Murali’s international career, which started in 2008 when he replaced Gautam Gambhir in the playing XI of the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia in Nagpur, lasted for 61 Tests, 17 ODIs, and nine T20Is. He amassed 3982 Test runs, including 12 hundred and 15 fifties, 339 ODI runs, one half-century, and 169 T20I runs.

He announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket in a tweet that began, “Today, with enormous appreciation & humility. It was an honor to represent India at the greatest level of sport, making my trip from 2002 to 2018 the happiest years of my life. I am appreciative of the opportunity provided to me by the Chennai Super Kings, Chemplast Sanmar, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).

“To all of my teammates, coaches, mentors, and support staff: It has been an amazing honor to play with you all, and I appreciate all you have done to make my dream come true. I will always treasure the times I spent with the cricket fans who have supported me through the highs and lows of international sport, and your encouragement has served as a constant source of inspiration for me.

In addition, he represented Tamil Nadu in 135 first-class and 94 List-A cricket matches, making his last appearance in late 2019. Additionally, Murali made 106 IPL appearances, amassing 2619 runs with two tonnes and 13 fifty-sevens until making his last appearance in September 2020.
