Earlier than two years ago, Ashwin and Nathan Lyon were competing to see who would take 400 Test wickets first. In the red-ball format, the two off-spinners have long been contrasted with one another. The Indian had edged out the competition and later entered the list of the top 10 wicket-takers. On the other hand, Lyon struggled to find his form, and some even questioned whether he belonged on the team. He not only disproved his critics, but he also recovered well to rank among the top 10 wicket-takers before breaking Ashwin’s record with a match-winning performance against the West Indies.

One of Lyon’s biggest knocks was how effective he was in a Test’s fourth inning. Lyon has taken the most fourth-inning wickets since 2019, and his match-winning 6 for 128 on Sunday added to that total. His fourth five-wicket haul in the fourth inning came during this time frame.

Lyon’s performance saw him surpass Ashwin to take the eighth-most wickets in Test history. He has now taken 446 wickets in 111 Test matches at a strike rate of 31.91, two more than Ashwin. He continues to be Australia’s third-highest Test wicket-taker overall, behind only Glenn McGrath (563) and Shane Warne (708), and fourth-highest among spinners, behind Muttiah Muralidharan (800), Warne, and Kumble.

Lyon now shares the tenth-highest five-wicket haul in Test history with India legend Kapil Dev after this 21st five-wicket haul in Test cricket and 12th away from home.

After the 164-run victory, Australia captain Pat Cummins, who had a quad injury, told reporters, “I think he’s got plenty of different tricks now.” He has always had a good off-spinner, but you have seen him bowl over and around the wicket a lot because of the way he moves around the crease. felt as though he could beat him with the outside of the bat or use the bat pad. He simply feels that he has a few different options for getting a batter out and is content switching between them, possibly more so than earlier in his career. He can bowl 25 to 30 quality overs in a day, which is something not many bowlers in the world can do, and it’s something he’s always been good at.
