Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the team’s mentor for the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League by the Lucknow-based RPSG Group, which officially appointed Andy Flower as the team’s head coach on Friday. Gambhir is a two-time IPL champion with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but the 40-year-old has recently been working as an analyst/commentator, most notably on the competition’s ‘Dugout’ channel.

The Lucknow-based team has signed a deal with Andy Flower, the former KKR captain, to serve as the team’s mentor, just one day after bringing him in.

“It’s an honour to be a part of the competition once more. Thank you, Dr Goenka, for including me as a mentor in the Lucknow IPL team. The ambition to win still burns brightly within me, as does the desire to leave a winning legacy. I’m not running for a locker room, but for the spirit and soul of UP “On Saturday, Gambhir confirmed his appointment via Twitter.

Gambhir will be involved with an IPL franchise for the first time since 2018. He was the captain of the Delhi Capitals franchise at the time, but he left mid-season following a streak of low scores with the bat, surrendering the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer.
