KL Rahul, the captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS), is expected to leave the franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. Rahul has been the captain of Punjab Kings since 2020, although in his two seasons as captain, he has failed to lead the team to the playoffs. After senior spinner R Ashwin was sold to Delhi Capitals, he took over as captain of Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2020 season.

Rahul has been immensely reliable with the bat, but his team has struggled as a unit and have finished outside the top four in both of the last two seasons under his leadership. In IPL 2021, PBKS struggled for consistency once again, finishing sixth with only 12 points from 14 games. Despite being the leading scorer in the IPL 2021 so far, Rahul was unable to lead his team to the playoffs for the second year in a row.

After being released by his previous team, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rahul was signed by Punjab Kings who paid INR 110 million at the player auction in 2018 to secure his services. Since then, he’s been their finest batter, routinely churning out runs season after season.

In just four seasons with Punjab Kings, Rahul has risen to become the franchise’s leading run scorer. In 55 appearances for Punjab Kings, he has amassed 2548 runs, including two centuries and 23 fifties.

Rahul was Punjab’s leading run scorer once again this season, with 626 runs in just 13 games, the most by any batsman in the league thus far. However, the franchise had yet another disappointing season, failing to enter the playoffs and exiting the tournament early. If Rahul is up for grabs in the big auction, a number of teams are likely to engage in a bidding war. The BCCI is yet to release new retention policy regulations for the blockbuster auction ahead of the IPL 2022 season.
