Kapil Dev gives insights into Kohli’s post-captaincy period, says the batter has to give up his ego
When Virat Kohli gave up his Test captaincy, he gave up on the helm of Indian cricket as he was effectively removed from the captaincy of the Indian cricket team for all 3 formats. This decision received a lot of mixed views from the fans and ex-cricketers. Many sympathised with the situation that Kohli found himself in, but some said he took this decision to avoid getting sacked by the BCCI.
Whatever may be the reason, Kolhi has left his mark in Test cricket as the most successful Test captain of all time, with his team winning 40 out of 68 matches. Kapil Dev was among many famous cricketers who gave their opinions on Kohli’s decision.
According to Mid-day, Kapil says, “I applaud Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as Test captain. He has been going through a hard patch since relinquishing the T20 leadership. He has appeared tight recently as if he is under a lot of stress. So, in order to play freely, giving up leadership was a possibility. He chose that since he is a mature man. I’m sure he deliberated long and hard before making such a significant decision. Maybe he wasn’t having fun as captain. Even Sunil Gavaskar, who played under me, has to back him up and wish him well. My coaches were K Srikkanth and Azharuddin. I didn’t have an ego. Virat will have to put his ego aside and play under the tutelage of a young player. This will benefit him as much as Indian cricket. Virat should mentor the new skipper as well as the new players. We can’t afford to lose Virat Kohli as a batter. Certainly not”.
