Fast bowler Deepak Chahar’s absence from the current three-match ODI series against South Africa has dealt Team India yet another serious injury setback. The fact that Chahar was one of the favorites to replace injured Japsrit Bumrah for the major tournament, and was included on the standby list for the T20 World Cup in Australia, makes the injury blow more significant. Washington Sundar has now been chosen by the selectors to replace Chahar for the ODI series, but Indian cricket fans have been continuously trolling BCCI over the choice.

“After the third and final T20I match between India and South Africa in Indore, Chahar had back stiffness and did not play in India’s starting XI for the first ODI in Lucknow. He will now return to the National Cricket Academy (NCA), where the medical staff will continue to keep an eye on him, “Read the Saturday-released statement from the BCCI.

Here are the reactions of supporters to BCCI’s call.

Due to an injury, Chahar was out of play for more than six months and had just recently made a comeback in August. He has had three injuries so far this year. During the West Indies series in February, he suffered a quadriceps injury. Later, while undergoing therapy, he had a back injury and missed the IPL. Sundar, however, has been out for most of the last year due to injury concerns. He did participate in competitive play during his time playing for Lancashire’s county team in August, which led to his inclusion in the India squad for the Zimbabwe series; however, he was forced to withdraw due to an injury.

Chahar was scheduled to go for Australia at the conclusion of the South Africa ODI series after being selected as a backup bowler for the T20 World Cup competition. The remaining members of the Indian squad have already arrived in Australia and are getting ready in Perth.

Mohammed Shami is most likely to be chosen as Bumrah’s successor for the World Cup, given Chahar’s injury. In two days, the announcement will be made.
