Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batsman for Team India, is on the verge of overtaking his idol and former India captain MS Dhoni. Pant will return to wicketkeeping for the Boxing Day Test against South Africa, which begins on Sunday (December 26).

The Delhi Capitals captain has 97 dismissals in 25 Tests and is on his way to being the fastest Indian wicket-keeper to reach 100 dismissals and only the sixth Indian wicket-keeper to do so. Dhoni currently holds the record for being the quickest Indian wicketkeeper to reach 100 dismissals, having done it in 36 Tests.

Wriddhiman Saha, who achieved the feat in 37 Tests, is right behind Dhoni. Kiran More, Nayan Mongia, and Syed Kirmani, all former India goalkeepers, round up the elite group, having accomplished the milestone in 39, 41, and 42 Tests, respectively.

Pant did not play in the two-match Test series against New Zealand. India went on to win the series by a score of 1-0. In Pant’s absence, Saha kept the wickets against New Zealand, with KS Bharat filling in for the first Test in Kanpur after the Bengal stumper hurt his neck.

In Centurion, India will begin a three-match Test series against South Africa. The first of three Tests against South Africa will take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion on December 26. The second Test will begin on January 3 at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The third and final Test match will take place at Newlands in Cape Town on January 11.
