India vs SA T20 series: All-format players likely to be rested

The five-match home T20I series against South Africa, which begins on June 9, will reward several IPL stars. On Sunday, the national selectors will convene to choose India’s team.

Leading all-format players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin, and Mohammed Shami are likely to be rested to prepare for the postponed final Test against England at Edgbaston on July 1, which would determine the 2-1 series. The Test squad, captained by Rohit Sharma, will also be picked. They will go for England in mid-June, with a four-day tour match against Leicestershire planned to begin on June 24.

Shikhar Dhawan is expected to be selected captain for the T2OI series, which will include a number of new players, including Mumbai Indians batting prospect Tilak Varma, speed wonder Umran Malik, and pacer Prasidh Krishna. Mohsin Khan and Arshdeep Singh, both left-arm pacers, will also be in the mix. Hardik Pandya, who has guided IPL newcomers Gujarat Titans into the playoffs, and Dinesh Karthik, who has shined as a finisher for Royal Challengers Bangalore, will both have comeback possibilities in this series. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, both spinners, might bowl together against Temba Bavuma’s squad.

Following the series, the same team will go to Ireland for two Twenty20 Internationals on June 26 and 28. India’s tour of England will conclude on July 7 with three T20Is and three ODIs, the team for which is expected to be announced later.
