Umran Malik’s performance in the IPL 2022 has caught the attention of legendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath. Malik must provide speed control, according to the former Australia pacer, who has worked with a number of future Indian fast bowlers at the MRF pace foundation. If the right-arm seamer can do that, the Australian icon believes he can play for any side in the world.

“Sheer pace is important but Umran Malik has to be prepared to put the work in to get that control and if he can combine control with that sheer pace then he’ll get into any team in the world,” McGrath told Sportstar.

Malik, who was discovered by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the close of the previous IPL season, has been a standout with the ball for SRH in the current season. The right-arm pacer from Jammu and Kashmir’s most remarkable trait has been his sheer speed. Malik has averaged above 150 km/h in practically every IPL encounter this season. McGrath believes Malik should concentrate on his conditioning since bowling at that speed can be taxing on the body.

“It’s about doing well in the second season and third season, once the batters get to know your bowling. When you are bowling 150 kmph-plus, that’s a lot of stress on the body and if you don’t put the work off the field to keep yourself strong, sooner or later you are going to break. When you are sitting and watching from the sidelines and they’re not picking you anymore, it’s not much fun,”McGrath said.

Malik has 15 wickets for SRH in 11 matches, at an average of 24. McGrath used the example of Jasprit Bumrah to emphasize the necessity of a fast bowler’s off-field effort.
