The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the squads for Team India’s ODI and T20I matches against Sri Lanka’s visitors on Tuesday. The list omits veteran sportsmen Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Rohit Sharma. Rohit may be hurt, and Rahul may have been benched because of his poor performance, but Kohli’s withdrawal from the team raised some questions among cricket fans. The year 2022 sees Kohli rank as India’s second-highest scorer in T20 Internationals. He has played 20 T20I games this year, scoring 781 runs at a fantastic average of 55.78. The right-handed batter, who averaged a whopping 98.66 runs per game while collecting 296 runs in six games, including four half-centuries, was also the tournament’s top run-scorer.

There are persistent rumors that team management may have started looking beyond seasoned players in the shortest format to give the Men in Blue some fresh energy before the T20 World Cup 2024. Although the main event is still a ways off, former India opener Gautam Gambhir shares similar views regarding the paucity of well-known athletes that were selected. He spoke with ESPN Cricinfo via Star Sports on Thursday.

“There must be openness. The selectors and players must communicate often. It’s okay if the selectors choose to consider others in addition to these people. I think a lot of countries have already done it “Gambhir said with clarity.

“We make a big deal out of it when management and selectors reject particular applicants. The next [T20] World Cup [in 2024] preparation strategy is ultimately what counts because you want to compete in and win that competition. I think you simply never know if these people weren’t able to achieve it. The younger generation, which includes individuals like Suryakumar, could succeed in achieving that goal “He said.

After India’s lackluster performance against England in the T20 World Cup 2022 quarterfinal, when they lost by an immense margin of 10 wickets, Rohit Sharma and the company came under criticism for their approach. The Men in Blue were criticized for passively playing cricket. Since that time, cricketing authorities like Gambhir have backed the best young talent and newcomers who play fearless cricket, like Suryakumar Yadav.

“To me, it looks challenging. There should be room for both Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. Because Hardik Pandya is here, I’d want to try to add guys like Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi, and Sanju Samson to the mix. They are courageous enough to play cricket “said Gambir.
