Sunil Gavaskar, a former captain of India, has heaped admiration on the youthful team of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, claiming that the two batters had the talent necessary to equal the success of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh in their respective eras. Yuvraj and Dhoni were a part of some of Indian cricket’s most illustrious match-winning combinations in the early 2000s, including their perfect 54-run partnership against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup final.

As Pant and Pandya led India to a five-wicket victory against England on Sunday, winning the series for them, Gavaskar made a significant prediction regarding the duo. The legendary cricketer thinks the Pant-Pandya combination can go far and help India win many more games, much as Yuvraj and Dhoni did.

When asked whether Pant and Pandya’s team can duplicate the success MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh had as a combo, Gavaskar said to Sports Tak, “It can happen.” Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant may be that duo for India in terms of the kinds of sixes they used to smash, the way they balanced the innings, and the way they raced between the wicket. I also hope Pandya and Pant can win over cricket fans, much as Dhoni and Yuvraj did with their sixes.

Dhoni and Yuvraj batted together for India 67 times between 2005 and 2017, scoring 3105 runs at an average of 51.75, including ten centuries and thirteen fifty-run partnerships. Some of the most noteworthy partnerships Dhoni and Yuvraj had together include the 158-run partnership against Zimbabwe in 2005, the 102 not out against Australia in 2013, the 148 against Australia again in 2009, and another undefeated 102-run alliance against Pakistan in 2006. Their greatest ODI partnership was in 2017 when Dhoni and Yuvraj put up a huge 256-run fourth wicket stand with both reaching a century.
