Jade Dernbach, an England cricketer who has been playing for Surrey County Cricket Club, will shortly return to the national team. He will not, however, return to the England side and will instead play for the Italian national men’s cricket team. He was just nominated to Italy’s squad for next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier.

Between 2011 and 2014, Dernbach was a member of the England national team. He hasn’t made it back into the white-ball national squad since then. Furthermore, white-ball cricket opportunities at his own club, Surrey, have dried up over the years. He was seen playing for Derbyshire on loan for the 2021 season in order to acquire some game time. He also announced that he will be leaving the team at the end of the current season.

Grant Stewart, another county cricketer, has been chosen in Italy’s squad for the event next month. He is an Australian-born cricketer who most recently played for Kent County Cricket Club during their T20 Blast victory last weekend. James Grassi, who plays domestic cricket for Leinster Lightning in Ireland, has also been called up to the Italian side.

After the ICC postponed the sub-qualifier events due to Covid-19, Italy qualified for the October qualifier, which is part of the pathway to the 2022 T20 World Cup, based on their T20I ranking. From October 15 to 21, they will compete in Spain against Jersey, Germany, and Denmark, with the top two teams qualifying for the global qualifications in early 2022.
