Suryakumar Yadav was promoted to vice-captaincy for India for the T20I series against Sri Lanka that begins on Tuesday in Mumbai after having an outstanding year in 2022. There are exciting days ahead for Indian cricket with the former Mumbai Indians pair sharing leadership duties in T20 Internationals with Hardik Pandya serving as his deputy. There are suspicions that the 2024 T20 World Cup may make Pandya and his youthful team India’s T20I set-up moving forward, with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli making few or no appearances.

Having said that, Gautam Gambhir is not assuming too much regarding the vice-captaincy position for SKY. The former India opener issued a warning against becoming too ecstatic over Surya’s promotion considering the ongoing uncertainty surrounding India’s T20I selection. Rohit Sharma will undoubtedly command the team if he decides to play in any future T20Is, but only time will tell whether Suryakumar will continue to serve as a vice-captain or if Hardik will take up that role.

“I don’t believe we need to investigate it too much because we need to wait and see whether they will keep Hardik as captain and Surya as vice-captain after Rohit joins the T20 team. How many alternatives did you have with this youthful squad? We’ll just have to wait and see.” According to Gambhir, ESPNCricinfo.

Surya is the most-deserved choice to lead India in T20Is. He was Team India’s lone bright spot in what was generally a disastrous 2022. With 1164 runs, Surya not only scored the most runs in T20Is but also topped the ICC T20I batter rankings. He leads India to two scorching centuries and several match-winning fifty-sixes, making him the best candidate for the leadership position. In addition to what he previously said, Gambhir said it may not be a terrible idea for Surya to continue serving as vice-captain and supported him in doing so.

“Now that he has been given leadership responsibilities, it is always an honor to serve as the nation’s vice-captain. So I am certain that he will do well. You can’t keep chopping and shifting players, even if Rohit Sharma is added and the selectors decide that Hardik is the perfect player and Surya should be the vice-captain. So be it if this is your basic leadership philosophy “Gambhir made a mention.
