West Indies announce squad for Test series against Pakistan

The West Indies have named their 17-man squad for the two-match Test series against Pakistan, which begins on August 12th, followed by the second on August 20th. Both Tests will be held in Kingston, Jamaica at Sabina Park. Chemar Holder, a fast bowler, and Shamarh Brooks, a middle-order hitter, have returned to the West Indies squad for the two-Test series.

Holder has recovered from an injury that kept him out of the home Test series against South Africa earlier this year, and Brooks joins the 17-man squad after a century in an intra-squad warm-up game last week.

Holder replaces the seasoned Shannon Gabriel, who has been left out due to a hamstring injury, in the first series of the new World Test Championship cycle for the West Indies. Brooks replaces Darren Bravo, who has been on a medical leave of absence since early June due to a bio-bubble.

In the whites, the two sides haven’t faced each other in over four years. In April-May 2017, the two cricketing nations met in the red-ball format, with Pakistan winning the three-match Test series 2-1. Pakistan may emerge as favourites in Test matches after whitewashing Zimbabwe in a two-match Test series played overseas (April-May). Furthermore, in both of their encounters against Zimbabwe, the visitors won decisively with a margin of runs and even an innings to spare.

In the previous edition of the WTC, West Indies finished second to bottom, winning only three of their 13 matches. They face Bangladesh, England, Australia, South Africa, and Sri Lanka in the 2021-2023 season, starting with two Tests against Pakistan.
