The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is an Indian Twenty20 cricket league that takes place in the state of Tamil Nadu and it was founded by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) as an exciting platform for bright and potential cricketers from around the state to display their talent in the game’s shortest format.

The Shriram Capitals-sponsored TNPL 2021, which will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium over the course of 28 days from July 19 to August 15, will feature eight teams and 32 matches. Over the years, the event has grown in both stature and appeal, and 633 players, including all of the top names, registered for the exciting TNPL-5 Player draught.

Tuti Patriots will be renamed Salem Spartans for the 2021 season, while iDream Karaikudi Kaalai will be renamed iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans. This year’s newcomers were the Nellai Royal Kings.

The Albert Tuti Patriots won the inaugural 2016 edition by defeating the Chepauk Super Gillies in the final, whereas the Gillies avenged themselves in the 2017 final by defeating the Thoothukudi franchise. The fourth season was once again a close race, with Siechem Madurai Panthers emerging victorious over Dindigul Dragons in the finals. Chepauk Super Gillies overcame Dindigul Dragons in the finals to become the first team to win the tournament twice.

The TNPL is not a minor league, with legendary players such as Michael Bevan, Lance Klusener, Brett Lee, Robin Singh, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Jonty Rhodes serving as coaches. This demonstrates the league’s importance in the cricketing community. While India has many state T20 cricket competitions, it is safe to say that the TNPL is the most popular in terms of viewership and prize money. The league’s fan base continues to increase as more and more high-profile players join the league.

The eight franchises, Albert Tuti Patriots, Chepauk Super Gillies, Lyca Kovai Kings, Madurai Super Giants, Ruby Trichy Warriors, VB Thiruvallur Veerans, Dindigul Dragons, and Karaikudi Kaalai, were formed after an exciting bidding process prior to the inaugural tournament and are named by the state district they represent.

The TNPL was launched by MS Dhoni, the then-India captain, in the presence of key TNCA officials. Since its start, Star India has been the official broadcaster, and the first two editions’ matches were broadcasted live and extensively covered in both English and Tamil. Some of the biggest stars in the game have also joined the commentary crew.

In the league phase, the eight teams compete against each other in a round-robin format. Each win will earn the team two points. The top four teams in the points table at the completion of the league stage will advance to the playoffs. The playoffs, like the IPL, have three matches before the final: one eliminator and two qualifiers.

In Qualifier 1, the top two teams from the league phase will face off, with the winner going straight to the final and the loser having a second chance to qualify for the final by playing Qualifier 2. Meanwhile, the third and fourth place teams from the league phase compete in an eliminator match, with the winner advancing to the Qualifier 2. The winner of this match advances to the final, where they will face the winner of Qualifier 1, with the winner being named champions.
