Shreyas Iyer cleared by NCA, set to return to IPL 2021

The National Cricket Academy (NCA) has given Shreyas Iyer permission to play competitive cricket. He will join the Delhi Capitals squad for the remainder of the IPL 2021 season, which will begin in September in the United Arab Emirates.

Iyer hasn’t played any competitive cricket in almost five months. He was last seen in action against England in a limited-overs series in March, when he hurt his shoulder.

Iyer, who has 22 ODIs and 29 T20Is under his belt, dislocated his shoulder in an ODI against England in Pune on March 23 and had to have surgery in the United Kingdom. The NCA’s medical panel has certified him fit to return to competitive cricket after he finished an intensive rehabilitation programme and showed his fitness during his week-long stay at the NCA.

“My shoulder, yes, I think the healing process is done. Now it’s the last stage of achieving strength and range. So that’s going to take about a month and the training is obviously going on. Other than that, I feel I will be there in the IPL,” Iyer stated.

With Iyer’s return, India’s T20 team will have more alternatives in the middle order, but all eyes will be on the Delhi Capitals management to see who they choose for the captaincy.

The 14th season, which was postponed in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will continue on September 19 in Dubai, with a showdown between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. After that, the action will transfer to Abu Dhabi, where the Kolkata Knight Riders will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore. On September 24, Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Chennai Super Kings in Sharjah’s first match. There will be 13 matches in Dubai, 10 in Sharjah, and 8 in Abu Dhabi.
