Sehwag backs Padikkal to be picked in India's T20 World Cup squad

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag believes Devdutt Padikkal has a chance to make the national team for the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Despite making his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in July, Padikkal was not included in India’s roster for the major tournament announced earlier this month.

Sehwag, on the other hand, believes the 21-year-old can break into the squad if he performs well in the second leg of the 2021 Indian Premier League. Padikkal, along with KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson, are the players to watch in the IPL 2021, according to Sehwag.

“Ishan Kishan will be my first choice, followed by Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul, and Sanju Samson. I’ll be keeping a close eye on these four. I’ve always admired Devdutt’s batting, and if I had to choose one of the four, he’d be my choice,” Sehwag was reported as saying.

He added, “Who knows, if he goes well, he might be drafted in as that Indian top-order for the T20 World Cup.”

Padikkal has been a revelation for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, after a shaky start to his international career. He made his debut in 2020, and he stole the show with some dazzling knocks at the top of the order. Padikkal has 195 runs from six innings in the 2021 edition, with a strike rate of above 152. Against the Rajasthan Royals, the left-hander also scored a century.

On Monday, September 20 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, RCB will face the Kolkata Knight Riders in the first match of the UAE leg.
