New Zealand to tour Pakistan in September after 18 years

The Pakistan Cricket Board released the schedule for the New Zealand tour of Pakistan on Thursday. The limited-overs tour will begin on September 17 and end on October 3 with three ODIs and five T20I matches. The BCCI has been taken aback by this news, considering the IPL 2021 Phase 2 is set to begin on September 19. Now that the schedule has been released, it will be fascinating to see how many New Zealand players will be able to compete in Phase 2 of the IPL 2021.

For the first time in 18 years, New Zealand will visit Pakistan. New Zealand last visited Pakistan for a five-match ODI series in 2003, and they last played a Test match there in 2002. Concerns over player safety have hampered international tours to Pakistan. After a suicide bomb assault outside their Karachi hotel in May 2002, New Zealand cancelled their Test series in Pakistan. In 2009, a bus carrying the Sri Lankan national team was assaulted near Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

“Series against a top-ranked side like New Zealand will be a perfect start to a mouth-watering and highly-exciting home season of red and white-ball cricket. The 2019 World Cup finalists, who are also the World Test champions and ranked third in T20Is, will draw tremendous attraction and interest from the local fans, and will reinforce Pakistan’s status as a safe and secure country. I am pleased New Zealand Cricket has accepted our offer to play two additional Twenty20 Internationals. These will not only provide extra games to both the countries as part of their ICC Men’s T20 WC preparations but will also allow New Zealand players to spend extra days in Pakistan, familiarise with our culture and enjoy our hospitality”, PCB chief executive Wasim Khan said on August 5.
