Mumbai Cricket Association set to dedicate hospitality box to Sunil Gavaskar in Wankhede stadium

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to give former India opening batsman Sunil Gavaskar the hospitality box at the legendary Wankhede Stadium. MCA confirmed the decision on 3 October. On October 29, the renowned cricketer will be presented with the hospitality box.

In addition to Gavaskar, former BCCI selector Dilip Vengsarkar will have a stand named after him at Wankhede Stadium’s North Stand. On the same day, October 29, the cricket body will open the stand. This date is significant since it coincides with the centennial year of Late Shri Madhav Mantri. The MCA has chosen to hand over the hospitality box to Gavaskar on this particular day.

The MCA has made all the necessary arrangements and invited Chief Guest Sharad Pawar and Honorary Guest G R Vishwanath. Both Gavaskar and Vengsarkar will be recognised by the MCA colours, according to a member of the MCA apex council. Gavaskar created a name for himself during his playing career and has left a lasting impact. Since his debut against the West Indies in 1971, the former India opening batsman has played 125 Tests for his country. He played without a helmet against West Indian and Australian fast bowlers and on unresponsive wickets that used to spit venom.

A memorial league tournament from Divisions C to G will be organised to celebrate former Mumbai captain Madhav Mantri’s centenary year, according to the MCA’s apex council meeting on Saturday.

The Talim Shield one-day tournaments will be held for the higher categories, while the Mantri memorial tournament will be held for the lesser divisions. Talim Shield will begin soon, having been postponed due to the Covid pandemic.
