KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah are front-runners for the white-ball vice-captaincy : Reports

According to a recent report from PTI, the board is considering three candidates for vice-captaincy of the Indian T20I team after captain Virat Kohli declared that he will step down after the T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman in 2021.

KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah are vying for the position of captaincy now that Rohit Sharma has taken charge. According to the report, as Rohit Sharma would take over as T20I captain after the T20 World Cup in 2021, the new vice-captain position should be filled by someone younger, who can then take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma when the time comes, as the mumbaikar is 34 years old.

“Pant is a strong contender, but as an IPL captain, you can’t rule out KL, Jasprit Bumrah will be the dark horse”, according to a BCCI insider. After the T20 World Cup, the BCCI will take its time announcing the chosen vice-captain for T20 captain-in-waiting Rohit Sharma.

KL Rahul last year, served as the stand-in captain for the fifth T20I against New Zealand, leading the side when the Kiwis batted while Rohit Sharma was out with a hamstring injury. In the IPL 2021, he also captains the Punjab Kings.

Rishabh Pant is the next in line, having captained Delhi in domestic cricket and now managing the Delhi Capitals franchise in the IPL 2021. His leadership has wowed everyone, as the DC sits atop the points table heading into the second half of the tournament. According to the report, if DC wins the IPL in 2021, Rishabh Pant will be the frontrunner to be the next India T20I vice-captain.

The article also named India and Mumbai Indians fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who has no previous captaincy experience in any format but has been a member of the Indian and MI leadership group for some time. Given that there will be another T20 World Cup next year, in 2022, with Australia hosting the event, it will be interesting to see what happens.
