Kieran Powell dropped from West Indies' 15-man squad for Sri Lanka Tests

Kieran Powell, the West Indies’ opening batsman, has been dropped from the Test squad for the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka, Cricket West Indies confirmed on Thursday (November 4). The sole new face in the 15-man squad will be uncapped hitter Jeremy Solozano, who will play two Tests as part of the present World Test Championship cycle.

Powell played in the West Indies’ most recent Test match at home against Pakistan and impressing in previous Best against Best matches and training sessions in Antigua, Solozano, an opening batter, appears to be the frontrunner to start alongside skipper Kraigg Brathwaite.

The introduction of Shannon Gabriel has given the West Indies a boost in the pace department and because of a hamstring injury, the 33-year-old was left out of the Pakistan Test team, but he has since replaced Chemar Holder. Shamarh Brooks, who had been recalled for the Pakistan series, has been dropped, along with backup keeper Jahmar Hamilton. Veerasammy Permaul, who was recalled to the Test team for the Bangladesh tour earlier this year, has been added to the squad to strengthen their spin attack. He took the position of Alzarri Joseph, who had a lacklustre performance in his most recent Test game against Pakistan.

West Indies will play a four-day warm-up match in Colombo beginning November 14 ahead of the two Tests. The first game will take place on November 21, followed by the second Test on November 29.
