Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes remain in doubt for Pakistan T20Is reveals Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan acknowledged that Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes’ participation in this month’s T20I series against Pakistan is in doubt, they may only play one white-ball international this summer.

Buttler batted in the first T20I of England’s home summer, reaching 68 not out against Sri Lanka, but he has missed the next five limited-overs internationals due to a calf injury, which has also kept him out of this week’s ODI series against Pakistan, which begins on Thursday in Cardiff.

Stokes was named in Durham’s County Championship side for the first time in three years in this week’s match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston and has played six times in the Vitality Blast in the last two weeks – though his return was accelerated by a second-team player testing positive for Covid-19, causing an availability crisis as several squad members were forced to self-isolate.

Morgan, on the other hand, stressed that the players would not be rushed back at the risk of further injury, and that the Pakistan series was not a priority in contrast to other tournaments later in the year. “The last thing we want to do is rush someone back and go from county cricket to international cricket when there isn’t necessarily a need,” Morgan explained. “We’re delighted for Ben to improve as he sees fit, but we’re also keeping an eye on the Test series.”
