IPL 2021: Andre Russell in doubt for clash against Delhi Capitals

After picking up a hamstring niggle while fielding against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell could miss the team’s upcoming match against Delhi Capitals. It was the 17th over during the chase, Russell, who has had problems with his right leg, particularly his knee, for several seasons, completed an acrobatic save on the midwicket boundary and launched himself off the field in frustration as soon as he released the ball. Even back then, the Knight Riders were aware that they were dealing with a crisis, but the nature of it was unknown.

At the post-match press conference, KKR coach David Hussey observed, “It’s still too early to tell. He stated that he felt something pop in his hamstring. We have the best medical staff in the industry, so they’ll take care of him, and hopefully it won’t be something serious, because he’s an important member of our team. With the bat, the ball, and on the field, he’s been playing exceptionally well. So hopefully it’s nothing major and he’ll be able to return and light up the competition like Andre Russell can.”

Despite removing Dinesh Karthik as captain and appointing England’s Eoin Morgan in his place, he suffered with a knee ailment in the IPL 2020 and didn’t play many matches, leading to his team, the Kolkata Knight Riders, failing to qualify for the playoffs. After a bad start to the season in India, KKR had a resurgence in the UAE leg of the IPL 2021.

Russell was set to bowl the Super Kings’ 19th over of a chase that was becoming increasingly tense. But then came the injury, which forced him off the field for the second time in the game, and Knight Riders had to scramble for a replacement. They chose Prasidh Krishna, who was dismissed for a game-changing 22 runs.
