Injury-hit Melbourne Stars sign Andre Russell for BBL 2021/22

Injury-plagued Andre Russell has been signed by the Melbourne Stars for a five-match stay in the ongoing Big Bash League. The flashy allrounder will play in Melbourne’s inaugural home match against Sydney Thunder on Friday at the MCG. Russell, by chance, has previously played for the Thunder. The West Indian T20 sensation appeared in 15 games for the Thunder across three seasons, and he also appeared in four games for the Melbourne Renegades. In this tournament, he has scored 296 runs at a strike rate of 166.29. He’s also taken 23 wickets at a 7.97 economy rate.

“Having someone of Andre’s calibre play for the Melbourne Stars is a major coup for our organization. We want our Stars family to be able to see the top players in the world compete at the MCG, and Andre is one of them. I’m excited to work with him throughout his visit, and I’m looking forward to his debut on Friday night “David Hussey, the head coach stated.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch made the following statement: “We can’t wait to see Andre in front of a big crowd at the MCG this summer. At the Stars, we try to have world-class players for our members and fans to adore, and Andre fits that description well. We’re excited to see him entertain and amaze everyone.”

After landing in Sydney, Russell is currently completing his statutory 72-hour quarantine. In the final of the Abu Dhabi T10 2021/22, the 33-year-old smoked 90* off 32 deliveries. Russell has amassed 6430 runs with a strike rate of 169.56 in 387 T20s. In addition, he has 343 wickets to his name. Haris Rauf, a Pakistani speedster, will also return on December 27 and will continue with the franchise for the remainder of the season.
