Defending champion TN faces Karnataka in Southern derby for Syed Mushtaq Ali title

In an intriguing Southern derby on Monday, an energised Karnataka stood in the way of Tamil Nadu’s bid to defend their championship in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 cricket event. The final in 2021 will be a rematch of the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali summit match, in which Karnataka defeated Tamil Nadu by one run in a nail-biter. Tamil Nadu overcame Baroda in the final of the postponed 2020-21 edition earlier this year to claim the prized trophy.

Tamil Nadu will be looking to avenge their 2019 final loss and defend their title on Monday at the Arun Jaitley stadium, while Karnataka will be attempting to capture their third SMA trophy. And for that to happen, their opener Rohan Kadam will have to repeat his semi-final performance against Vidarbha with another big knock. He and captain Manish Pandey will be hoping to manage Tamil Nadu’s formidable and varied onslaught and get the team off to a flying start.

“It’s an inexperienced trio, but they’ve performed admirably under pressure and carried the squad to the final. In the summit showdown against a powerful TN batting squad, they will have their work cut out for them.”, Kadam stated.

Karnataka will be without the experience and guile of K Gowtham (7 wickets) due to his selection for the India ‘A’ team, but the spin tandem of KC Cariappa (10 wickets) and J Suchith (6 wickets) will be key to the team’s chances, and their eight overs might decide the game.
