Danushka Gunathilaka announces retirement from Test cricket to focus on white-ball cricket

Srilankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has decided to retire from Test cricket so as to focus better on white-ball cricket. His most recent test match was in 2018, and he has scored a total 299 runs in the format. He has stated family responsibilities as the reason for dropping out of Test cricket. It is interesting to note that quite a few Sri Lankan players are taking early retirement and it should be a cause of concern for the Sri Lankan cricket board.

Danushka wasn’t having a good time playing cricket for Sri Lanka in the past couple of months. In the last year, he was handed a 1 year ban due to a bio bubble breach and was even given a hefty fine to pay. He has frequently been in trouble with SLC regarding discipline issues and has faced heat from the board due to that. From the time he made his debut in international cricket, he has faced many suspensions. He still managed to keep his place in the squad because of his vast potential and skill in the game. His decision to retire from Test cricket didn’t raise anybody’s eyebrows as he hadn’t played many test matches in the last 3 years.
