Dale Steyn discloses his RCB captaincy pick following Virat Kohli's retirement

Former South African paceman Dale Steyn wants KL Rahul to succeed Virat Kohli as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore when he steps down next year. Kohli recently declared his decision to stand down as RCB captain at the end of the 2021 edition of the league, only three days after revealing his decision to step down as India’s T20I captain at the end of the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Dale Steyn, who played for RCB in the IPL from 2008 to 2010 before returning in 2019-20, told ESPNcricinfo that in next year’s mega-auction, RCB must bring back their old player KL Rahul, who presently heads Punjab Kings. Notably, Rahul has played for RCB twice, once in 2013 and again in 2016-18.

“If RCB are seeking a long-term contender as captain, they should look within their own borders,” Steyn said in a debate before RCB’s match against Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians. An ex-Bangalore player is the name I have. It’s KL Rahul on the other end of the line. I just have a hunch he’ll be back in Bangalore for the auction next year.”

RCB must look beyond AB de Villiers, according to Steyn, since despite being a fantastic player, he is towards the end of his career and won’t be able to lead the team for long.

“I don’t believe AB de Villiers is the best option. I think he’s a fantastic player. However, he is nearing the end of his career. He’s a fantastic leader, in my opinion. If RCB is searching for a long-term captain candidate, they should look no farther than their own backyard. It’s KL Rahul on the other end of the line”, according to Steyn.

Sanjay Manjrekar, a co-panelist with Steyn, shared similar sentiments about AB de Villiers, however his pick for the RCB captaincy differed from Steyn’s.

“How long do you think you could get out of AB de Villiers as captain? As a result, I’d prefer to hire someone with at least three years of experience. Pollard is a man who possesses the traits of a leader. My three contenders are Suryakumar Yadav, David Warner, and Manjrekar.”
