The Big Bash League is one of the world’s most popular and competitive T20 franchise competitions and it was created with one purpose in mind, to attract and engage new supporters, younger generation, families, and female audiences to cricket. It is the Australian version of the Indian Premier League, with a few differences. While the IPL has been running since 2008, the Australian board delayed till 2011 to come up with the Big Bash League concept. Unlike the IPL, the competition features only six teams initially, with some of the finest players appearing on occasion.

The league has been a great and resounding success in Australia and throughout the global cricket community since its debut.

The BBL has a decent fan base thanks to bragging rights, a sense of one-upmanship, and the competitive spirit of the Australians.

The Big Bash League is contested by eight clubs from six different cities.

  • Melbourne Stars
  • Melbourne Renegades
  • Sydney Sixers
  • Sydney Thunder
  • Perth Scorchers
  • Hobart Hurricanes
  • Adelaide Strikers
  • Brisbane Heat

There are normally 19 players on team lists, with up to four internationals – three of whom can be on the team at any given time. This is an increase from earlier seasons, when just two overseas players were permitted to participate in an XI. Except for the debut season, the BBL has maintained the same format every year since its start in 2011. The first season of the BBL included 28 group stage matches, which were increased to 32 the following season. Since the 2018–19 season, each team has played every other team twice during the regular season, for a total of 56 matches before the final series.

The Big Bash League introduced the ‘Power Surge,’ ‘X-factor Player,’ and ‘Bash Boost’ rules to keep the event entertaining for viewers and tough for players.

The ‘Power Surge’ is a two-over period during which the fielding side will only be allowed two fielders outside the inner ring. From the 11th over of the innings onwards, the batting side can take it at any time. Meanwhile, the Powerplay has been cut to four overs at the start of the innings.

The ‘Bash Boost’ is a bonus point awarded at the halfway mark of the second inning. “If they’re over the equivalent 10-over score of their opponents,” the team chasing the target will be awarded the bonus point. If the chasing team is behind at the 10-over mark, then the fielding side will be given the point.

The ‘X-factor Player‘, sometimes known as the 12th or 13th player, can enter the game as early as the 10th over of the first innings, replacing any player who has yet to bat or bowl more than a single over.
