Aaron Finch ruled out due to injury, Alex Carey to captain Australia

With Aaron Finch ruled out due to a knee injury he aggravated during the last T20I match, Alex Carey has been chosen as Australia captain for the opening ODI against West Indies in Barbados. Finch’s ailment will be evaluated on a day-by-day basis, but with three matches in five days, it may be difficult for him to recover in time for this series.

Carey was formerly a shared vice-captain of the ODI squad until the selectors reverted to the conventional practise of having one player in the position last year, when Pat Cummins was named vice-captain across all formats.

Carey will captain an inexperienced One-Day International team against the Windies, with Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott, and Riley Meredith all in contention to earn their ODI debuts.

Australia is coming off a 1-4 loss in the T20I series against the hosts and will be hoping to turn things around in the three-match ODI series.

Finch has been dealing with a right knee problem for some time before twisting it while fielding in the final T20I on July 17. The 34-year-old had to take a few steps away from the ground. In a 200-run chase, Finch seemed uneasy, especially when he ran between the wickets for a second run on an overthrow in the last match.
