Bishop, Vettori turn against ex-India opener during Umran Malik’s India call-up debate
The Sunrisers Hyderabad have lost four consecutive matches in the 2022 Indian Premier League, although they are still in contention for a playoff position. After two consecutive defeats, the SRH went on to win five straight games before losing their form. With three games left, Kane Williamson and his team will seek to restore their lost form, with one of their standout bowlers, Umran Malik, expected to provide consistent performances.
With his blistering velocity, the 22-year-old pacester took the IPL by storm, setting the record for the league’s quickest delivery (157 kph). This season, Malik also recorded his first-ever five-wicket haul in the league, and his consistent performances have prompted demands for his India call-up. Many cricket fans and former players believe Umran should be considered for India’s limited-overs team, as well as the T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia later this year.
Former India batter Aakash Chopra said on ESPNCricinfo that Umran is “not yet ready” to play for India; his opinion was received with opposition by Ian Bishop of the West Indies and former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori.
“Umran Malik isn’t ready to play for India just yet.” Of course, we’re looking forward to seeing him perform. This is what most thrills us as Indians. I believe the youngster is still learning the ropes. He will play for India at some point, but based on the previous two games, he is not ready,” Aakash remarked.
