The lineup for the Women’s World Cup 2022 has been out and a few major changes have been made that has already created a social media ruckus. Mithali Raj will take charge as captain and Harmanpreet Kaur as the vice-captain. The 15 member squad will begin their campaign from 6th March 2022, at the Bay Oval against our nemesis Pakistan. The same squad will also play in the New Zealand ODI series from 11th February 2022.

Shikha Pandey and Jemimah Rodrigues were excluded from the squad. BCCI hasn’t stated any reason to drop such experienced and capable players from the squad, but it can be deduced that both Shikha and Jemimah haven’t performed up to the expectations of the selectors in this format. The squad will get good knowledge about the conditions when they will be up against New Zealand and it will help them prepare better for the WC.

The multi-day camp, which was proposed by and overseen by head coach Ramesh Powar, was primarily geared at team-building rather than talent development. According to reports, the players took part in a variety of challenges aimed at improving their understanding of one another as well as their ability to adapt better as individuals and as a team in high-pressure situations.

Squad: Mithali Raj (C), Harmanpreet Kaur (VC), Smriti, Shafali, Yastika, Deepti, Richa Ghosh (WK), Sneh Rana, Jhulan, Pooja, Meghna Singh, Renuka Singh Thakur, Taniya (WK), Rajeshwari, Poonam.

Standby Players: S. Meghna, Ekta Bisht, Simran Dil Bahadur
