Australian Cricket team’s coach Justin Langer resigns with immediate effect

Justin Langer, the head coach of Australia’s men’s cricket team, has resigned in an unexpected turn of events. Langer’s management company, Dynamic Sports & Entertainment Group (DSEG), verified the news on Twitter on Saturday.CA acknowledged in a statement released shortly after the news of Langer’s departure leaked that he was granted a short-term extension, which he declined.

Langer’s reign was hampered by rumors of player dissatisfaction with his coaching style. “DSEG confirmed that our client Justin Langer resigned as coach of the Australian men’s cricket team this morning. Following a meeting with Cricket Australia last evening, the resignation was announced”, the company said. The contract for Langer was set to end in June 2022.

“Justin Langer’s resignation has been accepted by Cricket Australia. Justin was offered a short-term extension to his current contract, which he unfortunately declined. CA would like to salute Justin for his exceptional leadership since taking over as Australian coach in 2018, leading the team to the T20 World Cup win and a 4-0 Ashes victory. Justin’s contract extension was the product of a thorough assessment process that considered a number of variables, including the team’s future needs and the approaching large fixture schedule. The CA Board authorised the extension, which was presented to Justin last night. There was also the chance to defend the T20 World Cup crown in Australia”, CA statement said.

Andrew McDonald has been announced Australia’s interim head coach. Cricket Australia confirmed the news on Saturday. Due to Langer’s absence from the Sri Lanka T20Is, he was anticipated to oversee Australia’s coaching squad. He will now lead the Australian squad on their upcoming tour of Pakistan. In his stead, CA is likely to name another interim assistant coach soon.
