Ravichandran Ashwin, an off-spinner from India, might play for Surrey in the County Championship before the Test series against England which begins on August 4. The game is set to end on July 14, the same day that the entire India team regroups after their vacation.

If he is granted a work visa, Ashwin, who has previously represented Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire, will play against Somerset at The Oval. For the time being, no tour games have been confirmed for India ahead of the five-match Test series against England, which will kick off the World Test Championship’s new cycle (WTC).

In terms of the World Cup, India skipper Virat Kohli was dissatisfied with the lack of warm-up games allotted to his squad before the final in Southampton.

“Well, that doesn’t depend on us,” Kohli said when asked if he would have preferred to play first-class matches instead of an intra-squad match.

“We obviously wanted first-class games, which I believe have not been given to us. I don’t know what the reasons for that are. But yeah, other than that, I think our preparation time will be ample for us to be ready for the first Test.”

Despite India’s appeal to the ECB to organise warm-up matches before of the Tests, no formal authorisation from the board has yet been received.
