IPL 2022: Andre Russell equals Chahal’s staggering IPL record with sensational last over vs GT, also scripts unique T20 record

Gujarat Titans attempted to establish a competitive target against Kolkata Knight Riders at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, with a set David Miller and skipper Hardik Pandya in the middle, who produced his third half-century on Saturday. They were on 132 for two at the start of the slog overs, which have been KKR’s weakest performers this season. Gujarat, on the other hand, were dismissed for 156 in 20 overs, thanks to Andre Russell’s stunning final over, which set a new IPL and T20 record.

Gujarat’s woes began with Shivam Mavi dismissing Miller in the 17th over, followed by Tim Southee dismissing both Hardik and his replacement Rashid Khan in his last over, and finally Russell picking up four wickets in the final over to reduce KKR to 156 for nine. In his opening over, he dismissed Abhinav Manohar and Lockie Ferguson in the first two balls before being denied a hat-trick by Alzarri Joseph. In the fourth ball, Rahul Tewatia hit a boundary off the slower and broader delivery, but Russell came back to remove him and Yash Dayal in the last two balls. He went 4 for 5 in the over.

Russell became the first bowler to take four wickets in an innings’ final over and the third bowler in T20 history to take four or more in the 20th over. Russell followed Rajasthan Royals bowler Yuzvendra Chahal, who got a hat-trick last week, and Amit Mishra, who was the first to achieve this feat in 2013, with four wickets in one over.
